Infection Control: Do You Have a Plan?

 Purpose:
To educate licensed nursing staff and administrators on the risk of infection in the long-term care setting. Participants will learn the regulations pertinent to the design and implementation of an Infection Control Plan (ICP) that will help reduce and prevent the transmission of infections. Federal and state (Iowa) regulations for an ICP are reviewed.
   
 Objectives:
Discuss the difference between nosocomial and community-acquired infections.
List three ways staff can prevent the spread of infection to and between residents.
Identify the three major components of an ICP.
State at least three resources for obtaining the most recent infection control guidelines.
Audit existing ICP for compliance with regulations and revise as needed, develop a draft of an ICP if no plan exists at this time.
