 Purpose:
To educate and empower professional nurses and administrators by demonstrating that most falls in the elderly are predictable and preventable. Learn to proactively intervene to provide a safe, restraint-free environment and to identify critical steps in reducing the risks of falls.
   
 Objectives:
Discuss statistics related to falls in the elderly population.
Identify two intrinsic risk factors that can increase the risk of falls.
Identify two extrinsic risk factors that can increase the risk of falls.
Describe at least three interventions for preventing falls in the elderly.
Discuss elements of a falls prevention program.
Explain the history of restraints and the impact of OBRA Regulations on the use of restraints in long-term care.
Discuss CMS penalties for inappropriate and indiscriminate restraint use.
Identify at least four measures to reduce or eliminate the use of restraints.
