  Falls in the Elderly (Second Edition)

 Purpose:
To educate licensed nurses and administrators as to the risks of falls in the elderly. Participants will gain valuable information on the effects of falling and interventions to prevent falls as well as setting up and monitoring effective fall reduction/prevention programs so that Iowa long-term care facilities are safe environments for our elderly citizens.
   
 Objectives:
Discuss statistics pertinent to falls in the elderly population.
Name three intrinsic risk factors that contribute to falls.
Name three environmental risk factors that contribute to falls.
Identify at least four categories of drugs that increase the risk of falls in the elderly.
Explain the three key elements of an effective fall reduction/prevention program.
Identify four risks associated with the use of restraints.
List at least four interventions staff can employ to prevent falls in their long-term care facility.
State the definition of a fall.
